A note from Lisa, founder of nomadic Tans
Congratulations on finding Nomadic Tans! Whether you're totally new to spray tanning, or trying to find a new provider, we are so happy you're here!
My name is Lisa. I'm a spray tan artist with over 12 years of experience spray tanning and owning my own Spray Tanning business, Nomadic Tans.
I'd like to personally thank you for taking an interest in Nomadic Tans, and share with you the story of how it all began.
Like most girls growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, I have always loved a great tan. I would lay in the sun all summer long, soaking up its warmth and admiring my beautiful, bronzed skin by late July. But, as luck would have it, I developed Vitiligo on my face and neck, white patches that do. not. tan. To protect those spots from burning, I began using maximum coverage sunscreen. I tried makeups and self tanning lotions, and tried spray tans at several salons throughout my teens, but nothing looked natural (the early 2000s was not the best time for self-tanning, amirite?).
While in college, I started working at chain tanning salon and realized the two key components to achieving a GREAT spray tan: a high-quality tanning solution AND an awesome spray tan artist. As I did more and more spray tans, I quickly found that not only did I love what I was doing, but I was really good at it. I had clients requesting me, and eventually was working at 3 different locations.
Though I loved spray tanning, a job at a chain tanning salon was never going to be a career path for me - I was in college to be a High School Math teacher, after all. So when it was time to leave and begin my "real career", I was sad to leave. How do you walk away from something you are talented at, genuinely enjoy, and brings so much joy to each person you work with?
After a LOT of research, and quite a bit of faith, I dumped what little money I had into starting up my own mobile spray tanning business.
While finishing up school, student teaching, and eventually becoming that math teacher I worked so hard to become, I was simultaneously building my business, providing clients with the highest quality spray tan experiences, in the comfort of their own homes.
In just a few short years, my little mobile tanning business expanded into something I would never have imagined possible, thanks to my loyal customers enthusiastically recommending my services to everyone they know. I was spray tanning from Westfield to Hoboken, Pennsylvania to New York! (Nomadic means 'without a fixed residence' - Nomadic Tans - get it?!)
Teacher by day, and a spray tan artist by night - the perfect pair of professions! I had it made. I got married, then had a baby, and began spray tanning my clients from my home to increase my much more limited availability. Then, we were getting ready to welcome baby #2 and 2020 happened. Cue the life-changes! I decided to leave teaching to raise my babies, and move almost an hour north to Sparta, where we could raise our boys in the space and surroundings we truly wanted for them - mountains forests and lakes, oh my!
Though we loved our decision to move, I still wished I had a way to serve my clients I left behind. As the era of lockdowns dwindled down, all of my clients began reaching out again for their much-missed tans. What to do?!
I had dreamed for years of a way to share this business with other hard-working, driven women like me, and like it was meant to be, just at the right time, a former client reached out to see if I offered any training for new artists. I said YES, and Tiffany joined the Nomadic Tans team, spray tanning right in Colonia, and able to take over all of my former clients in the area.
It is a dream come true be able to offer other women the ability to start their own Nomadic Tans businesses, earning their own income doing something they can truly feel good about - providing gorgeous, natural-looking tans, using clean and safe products, to clients everywhere. These women are an inspiration, and having a team to work with has been the greatest level-up from solo mobile tanning.
I am truly blessed and so proud of what Nomadic Tans has become, and look forward to many exciting things in our future.
I hope that my story has inspired you, not only to try spray tanning, but also to follow your heart and take chances - you never know what's waiting for you up ahead!
